Greenville Memorial Pool is located within beautiful Riverside Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Greenville is located in Mercer County in northwestern Pennsylvania, midpoint between Pittsburgh and Erie. The Shenango River runs through the town and was part of the Erie Extension Canal during the 1800’s. Greenville is a unique blend of outdoor recreation, cultural experience, and educational opportunities wrapped in a welcoming small town atmosphere. Opened for swimming on July 21, 1952 by the Greenville Business Men's Association, the community pool has been an important part of Greenville’s history. Operating during the summer months, the pool has provided a safe environment for swimming lessons, life guard training, swim teams, lap swimming, summer jobs, and entertainment for the residents of the Greenville area. The Greenville Memorial Pool was closed for the 2010 season due to the deteriorated condition of the facility. Despite the best efforts of some hard working volunteers, the years took a toll on the equipment and pool structure. New safety and handicap accessibility requirements needed to be put into place for the facility to pass state inspection. The closing of the community pool was met by a public outcry demanding that steps be taken to find a way to reopen the pool. Greenville Borough Council held three public meetings beginning in November 2010 to gauge the public interest in the project. When it was shown that the community was strongly in support of reopening the pool, the Greenville Memorial Pool Steering Committee was formed from volunteers at the last meeting.
The GMP Steering Committee has taken on the challenge of determining what is wrong with the current pool, what are the best options for improving the pool, raising the funds to pay for the renovations, and establishing a business plan for its continued operation and maintenance. The committee meets weekly and is actively working on this project.
